BJD Celebrates Defeat of Women's Reservation Bill as States' Win
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, April 18 (NationPress) Senior MP and BJD Parliamentary Party head in the Rajya Sabha, Manas Ranjan Mangaraj, expressed his support on Friday for the rejection of the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament, stating that this effectively also signified the defeat of the controversial Delimitation Bill (131st Constitutional Amendment).
He regarded this as a significant triumph for states like Odisha, which stood to lose a considerable portion of their representation in the Lok Sabha if the Delimitation Bill had been passed.
In a post on his X account, Mangaraj remarked, “Today, it was not merely about the Women’s Reservation Bill but rather the contentious Delimitation Bill (131st Constitutional Amendment) that faced defeat in Parliament. This represents a vital win for states like Odisha, which were in jeopardy of losing their rightful representation.”
He emphasized the initiatives taken by BJD president Naveen Patnaik to rally support from both the state government and Odisha's MPs against the Delimitation Bill. Mangaraj noted that Patnaik had taken a decisive and proactive stance regarding this matter.
The BJD leader further mentioned that Patnaik not only voiced significant concerns but also communicated with the Odisha Chief Minister and all MPs from the state, urging them to come together to protect Odisha’s interests.
“Regrettably, the 20 BJP MPs from Odisha did not meet expectations. They aligned with party orders instead of advocating for the state's rights,” Mangaraj stated.
“Nevertheless, truth has emerged victorious, and justice has been served. Despite limited representation in Parliament, we take pride in our leader's unwavering dedication to fighting for Odisha and its citizens,” he added.
In reaction to the Lok Sabha's failure to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill, Odisha BJP Mahila Morcha President Aishwarya Biswal described the event as a “very sad day for democracy,” accusing that political motives overshadowed the empowerment of women.
It is noteworthy that the Constitution Amendment Bills aimed at altering the women’s reservation law and increasing Lok Sabha seats for the upcoming 2029 general elections were defeated in the Lower House after two days of intense discussions.
