Ram Gopal Yadav Critiques NDA's Political Motive Behind Women's Bill Protests
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) In response to the NDA's plans for nationwide protests following the setback of the Women's Reservation Bill, Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Ram Gopal Yadav sharply criticized the government, asserting, "Let them bring, we will also bring ours."
The NDA, spearheaded by the BJP Mahila Morcha, is set to conduct demonstrations at district headquarters throughout the nation after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, failed to achieve the necessary two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha.
Although the Bill garnered majority backing, it did not meet the constitutional criteria for passage.
The legislation was designed to implement a 33 percent quota for women in Parliament and state Assemblies. Its failure has ignited intense political exchanges between the ruling NDA coalition and the Opposition.
While addressing reporters outside Parliament, Yadav remarked, “Women constitute the majority on our side. The Union government does not even recognize OBC women as women. They seem unaware of who truly holds the majority. Let them (Centre) present their Bill; we (Opposition) will also respond in kind.”
He further questioned the need to reintroduce the Bill, pointing out that a similar version was already passed previously.
"This historic Bill was approved in 2023. The officials involved then remain unchanged. So, what necessitated the amendments? Just yesterday, the old Bill was notified. What was the purpose of debating and voting on this?" the SP leader stated.
Yadav claimed that the move was politically motivated, aiming to sway upcoming state elections.
"The entire nation is aware they are doing this for votes. Elections are imminent in West Bengal. However, they overlook that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already enacted a 40 percent reservation for women. How will a mere 33 percent impact anything? The Centre did not consider this," he added.
He also scrutinized the Union government's rationale for introducing the Bill, given their lack of support.
"They were aware they did not possess a two-thirds majority. So, what was the purpose of bringing it forward?" Yadav questioned.
Targeting Prime Minister Modi, the SP leader stated, "The Prime Minister claims that those opposing the Bill will incur losses. Their only aim is political advantage."
Supporting SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav, Ram Gopal Yadav also advocated for extending reservation benefits to Muslim women.
Referencing the Sachar Committee report, he noted, "If you examine the Sachar Committee report, it reveals that the status of Dalits is comparatively better than that of Muslims."
