Karnataka student death: BJP alleges police extortion, Home Minister orders probe
Bengaluru, 29 April — The Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday issued a sharp condemnation of the alleged role of police officials in the death of a student, calling it a tragic incident driven by greed and abuse of power. State Home Minister G. Parameshwara responded by assuring a comprehensive probe into the matter.
What Happened
Aditya Maggeri, a student from Belur village in Bagalkot district, had come to Dharwad for education. According to BJP's allegations, he was wrongly implicated in a drug-related case and subsequently harassed by police officials demanding money — even after a medical report reportedly confirmed his innocence. The student allegedly died by suicide on 26 April.
The deceased student's mother alleged that she received a call from her son asking her to deposit ₹2,000 into his account to be paid to police to avoid being framed in a drugs-related case. She claimed that on 26 April, she received another call informing her that her son had died by suicide.
