Bengaluru, May 27 (NationPress) In a profoundly tragic event that led to the untimely death of a toddler during a traffic police check in Mandya city, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara expressed his heartfelt sorrow and labeled the situation as 'shameful'. He did not shy away from criticizing the involved police officers, indicating that they demonstrated a significant lack of humanity.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Tuesday, Parameshwara remarked, “This incident in Mandya is indeed shameful and brings deep embarrassment to us all. In response, three police officers have been suspended, and measures will be implemented to prevent future occurrences of such incidents in the state.”

He further noted, “Today, we have convened a meeting of senior officers to delve deeper into this issue.”

Parameshwara condemned the actions of the police during the incident, stating, “Their approach showed a complete absence of humanity and wisdom when dealing with the situation. Such behavior is intolerable.”

He stressed that police should not halt vehicles in a reckless or unscientific manner. “It is unacceptable for officers to hide at corners and suddenly appear in front of oncoming vehicles to stop them. There is a prescribed procedure that must be adhered to,” he asserted.

“The police often abruptly halt speeding riders, which startles them and puts their safety at risk. This issue will be discussed in today’s meeting, and appropriate guidelines will be established,” HM Parameshwara added.

He also highlighted that during the critical moment when the toddler's parents were racing to the hospital for a dog bite, the police intervened. “In such urgent situations, the police should exercise their discretion,” he emphasized.

When questioned about the potential reintroduction of vehicle towing in Bengaluru, HM Parameshwara mentioned that Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had raised the topic with him. “If towing serves the public interest, we will consider reinstating it. However, if it leads to inconvenience, we will refrain from implementing it. Decisions will be made with the public's best interests in mind, after weighing all pros and cons,” he explained.

The incident took place on Monday morning at Nanda Circle in Mandya city. The three-and-a-half-year-old girl, named Hruthiksha, was the daughter of Ashok and Vani, a couple residing in Goravanahalli, Mandya taluk. The family was en route to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) Hospital on a motorcycle after Hruthiksha had been bitten by a stray dog.

According to reports, the traffic police at Nanda Circle were stopping riders for helmet checks and other violations when they allegedly attempted to halt the family's vehicle abruptly.

In a sudden reaction to the police, Ashok stopped abruptly, resulting in a loss of control and a fall that caused Ashok, Vani, and their child to tumble to the ground. Tragically, the child sustained a severe head injury upon impact and passed away in her mother's lap.
