BJP Demands CBI Inquiry into Former Punjab Minister's Arrest Following Amit Shah's Remarks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chandigarh, March 23 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organized protests at district headquarters throughout Punjab on Monday, insisting that the inquiry into former Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) figure Laljit Singh Bhullar be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Leading the demonstration, State BJP President Sunil Jakhar oversaw the burning of Bhullar's effigy in the city of Patiala.
In a statement to the press, Jakhar asserted that Bhullar's arrest followed an indication from Union Home Minister Amit Shah that the case might be forwarded to the CBI, alongside the pressure exerted by the BJP's protests.
He claimed that the Punjab government is averse to handing over the case to the CBI because doing so could expose numerous layers involving AAP leaders, including those based in Delhi, and disclose the financial dealings of Ministers like Bhullar.
Jakhar referenced a previous incident where Deputy Inspector General of Police Harcharan Singh Bhullar, a suspended officer, was apprehended by the CBI in October 2025, noting that the Punjab government had attempted to obstruct the investigation from reaching the central agency.
He alleged that the current arrest was similarly motivated by a desire to stall the case.
Nonetheless, Jakhar vowed that the BJP would not permit this and would persist in its efforts until justice is served, firmly supporting the victim's family.
The State BJP President called for the case to be investigated by the CBI and to be expedited in a fast-track court, ensuring that the responsible parties are punished swiftly and justice is granted to the victim's family.
He also accused the state government of attempting to stifle the case and exerting ongoing pressure on the victim's family.
The suicide of a warehousing official has escalated into a significant issue, with Union Home Minister Shah proposing a CBI investigation if all state MPs submit a formal request.
