Why Has BJP Chief Nitin Nabin Been Granted Z-Category Security?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 20 (NationPress) In a significant move reflecting the increasing prominence of the Bharatiya Janata Party's leadership, the Central government has assigned Z-category security cover to Nitin Nabin, who was officially elected as the party's national president earlier on Tuesday.
This decision, made by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs following an assessment of threat perceptions by the Intelligence Bureau, comes shortly after his ascension to the highest organizational role in the world's largest political party.
Authorities have confirmed that the VIP security division of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has been designated to provide this elevated level of protection.
Armed CRPF commandos will accompany Nabin during his travels across the nation, at public events, and at his home, ensuring his safety around the clock, in line with his significant position. This category of security, among the highest available and just below Z-plus, is generally granted to prominent political figures, Union ministers, and other high-profile individuals deemed to be at risk.
The security protocol was set in motion a few weeks ago, following Nabin's appointment as national working president in December 2025 and was intensified after his unopposed election as the full president, with backing from 37 nominations from senior leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and others.
This arrangement mirrors the security provided to his predecessor, Jagat Prakash Nadda, and underscores the BJP's status as the ruling party at the national level.
Nabin, aged 45, is the youngest individual to lead the BJP and took office earlier in the day at a grand ceremony at the party's headquarters in Delhi, where Prime Minister Modi praised him as a 'millennial' leader ready to advance the party's legacy during India's developmental journey. The new president, a five-time MLA from Bihar's Bankipur constituency and former state minister responsible for portfolios such as Road Construction, Urban Development, and Law, brings considerable grassroots and administrative expertise.
The upgraded security measure is seen as a wise decision given Nabin's highly visible role, which entails extensive travel for upcoming Assembly elections in states like West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, along with preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
