Rahul Gandhi 'poster boy of anarchy': Delhi BJP chief Harsh Malhotra
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party President and Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra on Tuesday, 11 August launched a sharp attack on Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, labelling him the 'poster boy' of anarchy, lies, and hypocrisy, and accusing him of repeatedly fleeing parliamentary debate.
Key Allegations at the Press Conference
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, Malhotra issued a direct challenge to Gandhi and the broader Opposition. 'I challenge Rahul Gandhi and the entire Opposition through this press conference: Come to Parliament and discuss every issue concerning the country, from the students' movement to every other matter. But do not run away from discussion and do not disrupt Parliament,' he said.
Malhotra accused Gandhi of attempting to 'hijack' both the students' movement and Parliament itself — first by positioning himself at Jantar Mantar during youth protests, and subsequently by disrupting legislative proceedings.
Jharkhand Crackdown as Political Flashpoint
The BJP leader pointed to what he described as the 'violent suppression' of a students' movement by the Jharkhand government — which he said operates with Indian National Congress support — as evidence of Gandhi's hypocrisy. He alleged that Gandhi had spread 'false claims and misinformation,' including allegations of pellet firing against students, while sitting outside the Prime Minister's residence, only for events in Jharkhand to contradict his narrative.
Malhotra demanded that Gandhi publicly declare when he would withdraw support from the Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand. 'Otherwise, the country would conclude that the suppression of students in Jharkhand took place with Congress' approval,' he said.
Parliament Disruption and the Constitution Charge
Malhotra, who said he works alongside the Presiding Officers of both Houses and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to facilitate debate, accused the Opposition of deliberate obstruction. 'Those who carry a copy of the Constitution in their pockets are not only disregarding it by running away from discussions in Parliament, but are also attempting to hijack Parliament,' he said.
He added that Home Minister Amit Shah had publicly stated his readiness to participate in any debate, and that the government remained open to discussing all issues — a gesture he said the Opposition had ignored.
NEET and the Education Minister Row
Malhotra also addressed protests in Delhi linked to the NEET examination paper leak, alleging that certain political parties formed a platform called CJP to provoke youth and demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with resolving the crisis by deputing two senior Union Ministers to engage with student leaders and accepting their demands, which he said led to Parliament passing a law providing for strict action against examination paper leaks.
BJP's 2029 Warning
Closing his address, Malhotra issued a political warning: 'Rahul Gandhi, Congress, and most of the Opposition should understand that 2029 will be the year of their political wipeout and Gen Z will be the force behind it.' The press conference was conducted by Delhi BJP Media Head Praveen Shankar Kapoor, in the presence of State Minister Gaurav Khari, Yuva Morcha President Rajat Chaudhary, Spokesperson Yaser Jilani, and Media Relations Head Subhendu Shekhar Awasthi.
The Congress party had not issued a formal response to Malhotra's remarks at the time of this report.
