BJP Raises Alarm Over Rising Drug Trade Under DMK Leadership, Calls for Anti-Narcotics Task Force
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu has escalated its criticism of the ruling DMK government, asserting that there has been a marked increase in drug trafficking in the state over the last four and a half years. The party is urging for the prompt establishment of a Special Anti-Narcotics Task Force.
BJP spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad has stated that Tamil Nadu seems to be on the verge of becoming India's drug capital, accusing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's administration of not effectively managing the proliferation of ganja and synthetic drugs.
Referencing data previously disclosed by the Chief Minister in the Assembly, the BJP highlighted that the number of incidents reported under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has substantially risen during the DMK tenure, compared to the earlier AIADMK government.
The figures indicate that over 63,000 NDPS cases were recorded and more than 3.3 lakh kg of drugs confiscated in recent years.
The party contended that the increase in drug seizures—including a surge in confiscated narcotic tablets from approximately 39,000 in 2023 to over 1.4 lakh in 2024—demonstrates an expanding drug trade rather than enhanced law enforcement.
The BJP also mentioned several recent incidents, including significant ganja seizures in Avadi, Ramanathapuram, and other districts, alongside allegations of police involvement in drug-related crimes.
It criticized the government for merely targeting low-level offenders, demanding a high-level, independent task force to dismantle organized drug networks.
The BJP raised alarms over reports of ganja being sold near schools and railway stations, warning of its detrimental effects on students and youth.
They accused the government of inaction despite public grievances. In response to similar criticisms in the past, the DMK administration has claimed that it has intensified its enforcement efforts, achieving record-breaking seizures and arrests.
Ministers have assured that there is no large-scale ganja cultivation in Tamil Nadu and that the police are taking stringent measures against traffickers.
However, the BJP maintains that only a dedicated, aggressive operation led by a specialized anti-narcotics unit can effectively tackle the issue and restore public confidence.
