Is the BJP Right to Call the Opposition's Actions 'Shameful' During the President’s Address?

Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) The BJP expressed strong disapproval on Thursday regarding the Opposition's disruptive behavior during President Droupadi Murmu's address at the commencement of the Budget Session, labeling it a 'disgraceful act' that undermines the decorum of Parliament.
During this time, Opposition members engaged in loud slogan-shouting, voicing their discontent with the newly introduced 'VB–G RAM G' law, which aims to replace the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
As President Murmu delivered her traditional speech to the joint assembly of Parliament, Opposition MPs interrupted with demands for the retraction of the new legislation. While members of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) applauded the address, the Opposition's protests resulted in frequent disruptions, provoking critical responses from BJP representatives.
BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Sharma told IANS that the Opposition's behavior revealed its unease with themes of nationalism.
“When the bill was referenced in the name of Lord Ram, they became upset. They also interrupted during the mention of 'Vande Mataram'. When Vande Mataram and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee were discussed, the INDIA Bloc began to chant slogans. Do they oppose Vande Mataram, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, or the essence of nationalism? This conduct is utterly shameful. The INDI alliance must cease such actions. It is truly disgraceful,” Sharma stated.
BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal remarked that the Opposition had sufficient chances to express its concerns in an orderly fashion.
“During the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, all members of Parliament customarily extend their gratitude to the President. If anyone wishes to object or discuss any matter, there are three full days set aside for debate. They can raise any point, and the government will address every inquiry. The VB–G RAM G Act is a beneficial law, and we are ready to respond to any questions. The issue lies with those who prefer disruption over dialogue,” he told IANS.
BJP spokesperson Pratul Sahdeo deemed the slogan-shouting as embarrassing and disrespectful.
“This was disgraceful. When the Opposition shouted loud and objectionable slogans during the President’s address, it was profoundly embarrassing. The highest constitutional position in our nation is currently held by a tribal woman who has achieved this status through tremendous struggle. Even the mention of Lord Ram seems to unsettle Congress and other Opposition members,” he articulated.
Similarly, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Brijlal expressed that such occurrences should never take place during a presidential address.
“This is incredibly unfortunate and disrespectful. Regarding the VB–G RAM G law and the welfare of workers, previously workers were guaranteed 100 days of employment. Now, 125 days of work are being ensured. Provisions have also been established to pay interest separately if work is not available on a given day. These are indeed progressive measures,” he added.
However, the Opposition stood by its protest.
Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Virendra Singh stated, “All parties hold respect for the President, but the tragedy is that she is compelled to present a collection of falsehoods put forth by the government.”
He claimed that schemes like VB–G RAM G would ultimately deprive millions of people of the security they previously had under MGNREGA, making opposition essential.
SP MP Rajeev Kumar Rai accused the BJP of double standards.
“They ought to recall how they behaved when they were in Opposition. Now they are in power, yet they preach to others, despite their own past actions—from riding cycles to wearing onion garlands—being notorious,” he noted.
Another SP MP, Anand Bhadauriya, alleged that the government was employing religious symbolism to distract from workers’ issues.
“By invoking Lord Ram's name, the BJP is jeopardizing the future of the nation’s workers. When the President addressed this law, it was clear that had the Opposition MPs remained silent, they would not have been forgiven for the sweat and toil of laborers,” he asserted.
The uproar erupted during President Droupadi Murmu's customary speech at the beginning of the Budget Session, where she spoke about the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) Act.
While NDA MPs applauded, Opposition members caused a disturbance and called for the law's withdrawal.
