Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national secretary K. Surendran on Tuesday, 22 September escalated his offensive against the newly formed United Democratic Front (UDF) government in Kerala, alleging that Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and his cabinet ministers were receiving undisclosed financial sponsorships and demanding a full public disclosure of their benefactors.

Chartered Flight and Luxury Car Allegations

Speaking to reporters in Kasaragod, Surendran questioned who had paid for a chartered flight used by Chief Minister Satheesan on Monday to travel from Thiruvananthapuram to Karipur. He also alleged that State Local Self Government Minister K.M. Shaji had been avoiding the official government vehicle and instead travelling in a private luxury car.

'Who are these friends who are showing so much affection to the Chief Minister and his ministers?' Surendran asked, characterising the pattern as suggestive of undisclosed quid pro quo arrangements.

Foreign Trips and Freebies Allegations

Surendran further alleged that the Home Minister and the Sports Minister had been taken on foreign tours by private individuals. 'People are taking the Home Minister and the Sports Minister on foreign tours. I cannot understand why people have so much affection for these ministers,' he said.

He also claimed that the freebies and perks allegedly being extended to Indian National Congress (Congress) leaders and ministers were being accepted in return for favours, adding that 'there is a suspicion even within the Congress that these freebies are being accepted as a return for favours.'

Attack on UDF's Pace of Governance

Surendran alleged that the UDF, after a decade out of power, was overcompensating rapidly. 'V.D. Satheesan and his team are trying to surpass in three months what Pinarayi Vijayan did in 10 years,' he alleged, invoking the predecessor Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's tenure as a benchmark for alleged misconduct.

He also demanded that Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal publicly clarify their positions on the alleged sponsorships, claiming that certain persons had backed Satheesan's bid to become Chief Minister.

CMRL-Exalogic Case and Probe Delay Charges

Surendran targeted the government over the CMRL-Exalogic case, alleging that Chief Minister Satheesan was attempting to protect former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his family from scrutiny. He claimed that a 15-day delay in ordering an investigation into the case was a deliberate act of 'mutual cooperation' between the two leaders.

'Satheesan is trying to save Pinarayi Vijayan and his family in the Exalogic case. The delay of 15 days in ordering the investigation is part of their mutual cooperation,' Surendran alleged. The government has not yet publicly responded to these specific charges.

The BJP's renewed pressure campaign comes as the newly elected UDF government is still in its early weeks of governance.
