Jammu, March 15 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) on Saturday called for the rehabilitation of 39 shopkeepers who have been displaced in Jammu city.

BJP MLAs Vikram Randhawa and Narinder Singh raised this critical issue at the outset of the Assembly session.

They highlighted that the administration had issued notices mandating 39 shopkeepers to vacate their establishments, despite a prior commitment that these individuals would be allotted alternative land prior to the construction of the flyover from Kunjwani to Satwari in Jammu city.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather instructed the MLAs to take their seats to ensure the Question Hour proceeded without disruption.

Once the Question Hour concluded, the BJP legislators reiterated the issue and sought a reply from the government.

The Speaker mentioned that he cannot compel the government to address matters raised during the Zero Hour.

The BJP asserted that, in contradiction to a pledge of adequate rehabilitation, the shopkeepers of Nai Basti were served notices demanding they vacate their premises and remove their belongings.

Later, addressing reporters outside the assembly, the BJP MLAs stated that the 39 shopkeepers have a legitimate claim for the land that was promised to them so they can rebuild their lives.

Randhawa indicated that the shopkeepers are now on the streets and that the BJP MLAs would stand with them if the government does not take action to rehabilitate them.

The Satwari-Kunjwani flyover, intended to alleviate congestion on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway, began construction at the end of 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2024.

During the Zero Hour, other MLAs brought up concerns regarding accidents caused by dumpers in the Kathua district, power shortages in the Ramban district, and the difficulties faced by residents due to continuous rainfall over the past three days.
