BJP legislator Pradyut Bordoloi delivered a politically charged address in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday, 25 May, invoking the state's pre-Independence history and crediting former Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi with preventing Assam from being absorbed into Pakistan during the Partition era. Speaking during the discussion on the Governor's address, the Dispur MLA drew explicit parallels between historical threats to Assamese identity and the present Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's stated commitment to protecting indigenous rights.

Historical Claims at the Centre of the Speech

Bordoloi recalled the debates surrounding the Cabinet Mission Plan and the Muslim League's demand for Pakistan under the two-nation theory. He argued that Assam had once been proposed for grouping with Bengal, raising fears the state could ultimately become part of Pakistan. 'Gopinath Bordoloi fought to protect Assam, Assamese identity and the existence of indigenous people when there were attempts to club Assam with East Bengal,' he said on the Assembly floor.

The MLA also alleged that while the Assam Congress leadership under Gopinath Bordoloi resisted this grouping, the Congress Working Committee at the national level was reportedly willing to compromise the state's interests in the interest of securing Independence. He claimed Gopinath Bordoloi had even signalled willingness to quit the Congress if that was what it took to continue the struggle for Assam.

References to Jinnah and 'Direct Action'

Bordoloi invoked Muhammad Ali Jinnah's 'Direct Action' call, asserting that fears over Assam's future had intensified during that period. Drawing on his political experience in Nagaon, he said echoes of slogans and sentiments targeting Assam from that era still lingered in public discourse. Without naming any individual directly, he also remarked that some leaders associated with the Muslim League had later joined the Congress after Independence and gone on to become ministers and legislators.

Linking History to the Present BJP Government

Bordoloi asserted that Assam remained part of India solely because of the 'strong stand' taken by Gopinath Bordoloi. He drew a direct line from that historical struggle to the current administration, arguing that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP government was similarly committed to protecting indigenous rights, Assamese identity, and the state's cultural heritage. He urged all Assembly members to back the vision outlined in the Governor's address, particularly on indigenous protection and the preservation of Assamese civilisation.

Bordoloi's Political Journey

The speech carries additional weight given Bordoloi's own trajectory. He spent decades in the Indian National Congress (INC) and represented Nagaon as a Congress Member of Parliament after winning the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He subsequently crossed over to the BJP ahead of the Assembly polls and won the Dispur constituency on a BJP ticket. His invocation of Congress's alleged historical compromise of Assam's interests is therefore notable, coming from a figure who was himself a senior Congress functionary until recently.

The address signals that the BJP in Assam intends to keep questions of identity, indigeneity, and historical memory at the forefront of Assembly discourse as the state heads deeper into its current political cycle.
