BJP Calls Attention to 2008 Cash-for-Votes Scandal on WikiLeaks Anniversary
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fierce critique against the Congress Party on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the WikiLeaks disclosures, bringing to light the notorious 2008 "cash-for-votes" scandal.
In a post shared via social media, the BJP accused the inaugural Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre of having "put democracy on sale" to navigate a pivotal trust vote linked with the contentious India-US nuclear deal.
With the title “This Day, That Year. Taking you back 12 summers,” the BJP revisited the significant events of March 17, 2011, when leaked diplomatic cables purportedly unveiled an extensive bribery scheme.
“On 17 March, 2011, a devastating revelation associated with WikiLeaks sent shockwaves through India’s political arena. Leaked diplomatic communications suggested that during the critical 2008 trust vote in the Indian Parliament, allies of the ruling Congress administration displayed bundles of cash to procure MPs’ support and uphold the government of Manmohan Singh,” the BJP stated in their post on X.
The scandal reached its zenith in 2008 when three BJP MPs—Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste, and Mahabir Singh Bhagora—created a stir in the Lok Sabha by brandishing stacks of cash on the floor. They alleged that they were offered Rs one crore each to abstain from the vote.
“This vote was intended to assess the government’s legitimacy in light of the controversial India-US nuclear deal. Instead, it became synonymous with the "cash-for-votes" scandal, overshadowing the sanctity of Parliament with accusations that money influenced elected representatives,” the post continued.
The BJP emphasized the significance of this moment, stating, “For a party that claims to uphold the strength of its democracy, the images of MPs showcasing bundles of cash within Parliament are unforgettable.”
It concluded the post with a thought-provoking question: “A stark reminder of a dark chapter in India’s political history when the world was watching—did Congress truly put democracy for sale?”
