New Delhi, Aug 17 (NationPress) The BJP has officially named Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election. This decision followed a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
During a press conference, BJP President J.P. Nadda stated that the party engaged in discussions with both allies and various opposition parties over the previous week.
“We are optimistic that the election for Vice President will be decided by consensus. We have reached out to many parties, and while the opposition plans to respond post our announcement, we remain hopeful for broader support,” he commented to the media.
The choice of Radhakrishnan, a veteran politician closely associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is perceived as a calculated move to connect with Tamil Nadu, particularly with Assembly elections approaching next year.
Born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan was inspired by the RSS in his youth.
From his early days, he became an active participant, fostering his political foundation in the ideology of the Sangh Parivar. He advanced through the BJP ranks, holding the position of Tamil Nadu state President from 2004 to 2007, a time characterized by efforts to widen the BJP’s influence in the Dravidian region.
Radhakrishnan took office as Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024, after serving as Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024.
Additionally, he held responsibilities as the Governor of Telangana (from March to July 2024) and as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry (from March to August 2024).
This selection by the BJP highlights the party's strategy to present a Tamil figure on the national stage ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
With his strong connections to the RSS and extensive administrative background, Radhakrishnan’s nomination reflects the NDA’s commitment to enhancing its strategy in the south.
