New Delhi, Aug 17 (NationPress) The BJP officially declared Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) nominee for the Vice-Presidential election following a parliamentary board meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BJP President J.P. Nadda stated during a press conference after the meeting that the party had engaged in talks with both allies and various opposition factions over the preceding week.
"We anticipate that the Vice President’s election will be consensus-driven. We’ve had conversations with numerous parties, and while the opposition mentioned they would make a decision post our announcement, we are optimistic about garnering broader support," he remarked to the media.
The choice to nominate Radhakrishnan, a veteran politician with deep-rooted connections to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is perceived as a strategic initiative aimed at Tamil Nadu, where Assembly elections are on the horizon next year.
Born on October 20, 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan was attracted to the RSS during his adolescence.
In his formative years, he quickly became an engaged member, laying the groundwork for his political beliefs shaped by the Sangh Parivar ideology. He climbed the ranks of the BJP, acting as the Tamil Nadu state President from 2004 to 2007, a time characterized by efforts to enhance the BJP’s presence in the Dravidian region.
Radhakrishnan took on the role of Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024, following a term as Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024.
He also held additional roles as the Governor of Telangana from March to July 2024 and as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry from March to August 2024.
The BJP’s selection highlights the party’s strategy to feature a Tamil figure at the national stage ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
With his profound RSS background and administrative expertise, Radhakrishnan’s nomination reflects the NDA’s commitment to reinforcing its southern strategy.
