Chennai, Aug 17 (NationPress) The choice made by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to nominate Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as its Vice-Presidential candidate has brought attention to a seasoned BJP leader whose political career stretches nearly five decades, characterized by grassroots activism, strong organizational skills, and notable administrative experience.
Born in 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan was drawn into public service early on through his involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
His ties with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh during the 1970s established the groundwork for a lengthy career in the BJP, where he progressively ascended through the ranks.
He served as the president of the party's Tamil Nadu unit from 2004 to 2007 and has played a crucial role in strengthening the BJP's organizational presence within the state.
Radhakrishnan represented Coimbatore in the Lok Sabha twice, winning elections in 1998 and 1999, and was recognized for his dedication to industrial growth, infrastructure, and education.
In 2016, he was appointed as the chairman of the Coir Board in Kochi, where he achieved record export levels.
He later took on the role of BJP's national in-charge for Kerala, a position that challenged his organizational and political outreach skills.
His constitutional duties began in 2023 with his appointment as the Governor of Jharkhand.
He briefly managed additional responsibilities for Telangana and Puducherry before being reassigned to Maharashtra in 2024.
Throughout these assignments, Radhakrishnan built a reputation for being calm and free of controversy, a contrast to some of his predecessors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi endorsed his candidacy, commending him as a leader who embodies “dedication, humility, and intellect” along with a steadfast commitment to grassroots empowerment.
BJP leaders believe that his promotion will enhance the party's influence in Tamil Nadu, where he is part of the influential Gounder community, an OBC group with considerable electoral power.
At 67, Radhakrishnan brings nearly 40 years of public service, combining political and administrative expertise.
His selection as the NDA's vice-presidential candidate not only showcases the ruling coalition's electoral strength but also its intention to present a leader with cross-party appeal and regional significance.
If elected, as anticipated given the NDA's majority, Radhakrishnan will take over from Jagdeep Dhankhar, stepping into a role where his understated, statesmanlike demeanor is expected to shape his tenure.
On Sunday, Radhakrishnan expressed profound gratitude to Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, N. Chandrababu Naidu and Devendra Fadnavis, respectively, after being named the NDA’s candidate for the Vice Presidential election.
In a series of posts on X, Radhakrishnan expressed that he was "moved and touched beyond words" by the faith shown in him by the NDA leadership.
"My heartfelt thanks to our beloved People’s leader, our most respected Honourable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji, our most respected Honourable Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji, BJP President Shri @JPNadda Ji, parliamentary board members, NDA partners, and ministers for selecting me as their Vice-Presidential candidate. I pledge to work diligently for the Nation until my last breath. Jai Hind!" he wrote.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated him, referring to Radhakrishnan as an accomplished parliamentarian and administrator.
"Your contributions as a parliamentarian and as governor of various states have significantly aided in fulfilling constitutional duties effectively. I am confident your extensive experience and wisdom will elevate the esteem of the Upper House and achieve new milestones," Shah stated on X, thanking PM Modi and the BJP parliamentary board for the decision. Radhakrishnan replied by thanking the Home Minister, recognizing him as a "beloved and respected people’s leader".
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu also welcomed the announcement, describing Radhakrishnan as a "senior statesman who has distinguished himself through years of service to the nation". He noted that the Telugu Desam Party "warmly supports his nomination". In response, Radhakrishnan expressed, “My heartfelt thanks to our beloved People’s leader, our most respected Honourable Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Shri. @ncbn Garu."
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also congratulated him, stating that his nomination "fills all Maharashtrians with immense pride".
He emphasized Radhakrishnan’s legislative and constitutional expertise acquired through his tenure as a two-time MP and Governor of different states.
Radhakrishnan, in turn, expressed his “heartfelt thanks” to Fadnavis for the kind wishes.
He also extended his gratitude to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
