Assam Finance Minister Ajanta Neog on Thursday, 7 May said the increase in women legislators elected on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tickets in the Assam Assembly elections reflects growing public confidence in the party's governance and leadership. Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Neog described the BJP's improved electoral margin as a "historic mandate."

Neog confirmed that seven women Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have been elected on BJP tickets in the latest assembly elections, up from five in the previous assembly. She attributed this rise to the party's sustained outreach at all organisational levels and the effectiveness of welfare-oriented schemes implemented by the state government.

"The victory margin has increased significantly this time. This is a historic mandate and the credit goes to the leadership and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party from the grassroots to the top level," Neog said.

The minister credited Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's leadership as a major factor in consolidating public support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the state. She highlighted that welfare schemes and development initiatives undertaken over the past few years had directly reached citizens at the grassroots level, strengthening electoral support.

"The government's policies and welfare measures reached ordinary citizens, and this strengthened people's faith in the Bharatiya Janata Party," she said.

Women's Reservation Bill: Disappointment and Expectations

Neog also addressed the long-pending Women's Reservation Bill, expressing disappointment that the legislation had not yet been implemented despite widespread expectations among women leaders and political workers. "We had hoped that the Women's Reservation Bill would be passed earlier. Unfortunately, that did not happen," she said.

The finance minister alleged that opposition parties, particularly the Indian National Congress (Congress) and some of its allies, lacked sincerity on the issue of women's political representation. She praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiatives aimed at women's empowerment and expressed confidence that the proposed reservation framework would enhance women's participation in politics.
