Did Women BJP MPs Express Gratitude to Speaker for Upholding LS Dignity?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) Women MPs from the ruling BJP have addressed a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, thanking him for upholding and protecting the dignity and sanctity of the House during the Motion of Thanks discussion regarding the President's Address on February 4.
This follows a letter from Congress women MPs, who voiced strong objections to what they termed grave allegations, claiming they had threatened or attempted to obstruct Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the House on the same day.
In their correspondence, the BJP MPs expressed, “We wish to convey our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the exemplary manner in which you upheld and safeguarded the dignity, decorum, and sanctity of the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the Honourable President's Address on February 4, 2026.”
They described the events of February 4 as “one of the most unfortunate and regrettable incidents” within the Lok Sabha, noting that “members of opposition parties not only entered the Well of the House but also climbed onto tables, tore up papers, and threw them towards the Speaker.”
They further commented on the disruptive behavior of some Honourable women Members, who, “behaving aggressively and carrying banners and placards, crossed over to the other side.” This included surrounding the Prime Minister's seat and entering the Treasury Benches.
The ruling party’s women MPs indicated that despite feeling “deeply provoked and enraged” by the opposition’s actions, they exercised utmost restraint and did not retaliate, adhering to the guidance of senior leaders.
“Had we not exercised restraint, an unpleasant situation could have arisen. It grew more serious when opposition MPs aggressively approached your chamber, and we could hear loud noises from inside,” they stated.
They urged for strict action against those responsible, expressing, “This dangerous turn of events within the hallowed premises of the Lok Sabha has deeply concerned us all.” They emphasized that the situation could have led to severe consequences, marking it as potentially one of the darkest moments in the history of parliamentary democracy.
They urged the Speaker to take the strongest possible action within the rules against the opposition MPs involved in these heinous acts that tarnished the reputation of democratic institutions.
Additionally, the BJP MPs commended the Speaker for his impartiality and leadership over his seven-year tenure, stating, “Your consistent efforts to enhance the prestige and effectiveness of this House are commendable.”
They expressed full confidence in his leadership, asserting that the Lok Sabha is fortunate to have him as its custodian.
The controversy arose after Speaker Birla mentioned he had received information suggesting that opposition MPs might engage in “unexpected” actions, leading him to adjourn the House to maintain decorum in what he described as the temple of democracy.
As the clock approached 5 p.m. on February 4, members were awaiting the Prime Minister’s entry to begin his address, amidst ongoing protests within the House. Reports indicated that around eight to nine women MPs from the opposition were gathered at the Prime Minister's seat, including Geniben Thakor, Varsha Gaikwad, Jyotimati, R. Sudha, K. Kavya, and Shobha Bachhav.
The Congress party has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless.”
Following the adjournment, the Prime Minister’s scheduled response to the Motion of Thanks on the President's address was canceled.
