Bhubaneswar, July 1 (NationPress) In a shocking incident, Ratnakar Sahoo, an officer in the Odisha Administrative Services (OAS) and Additional Commissioner of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), was assaulted by individuals allegedly affiliated with senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jagannath Pradhan. Following this, the party's state unit president Manmohan Samal announced the suspension of five party members, including a corporator, from the party's primary membership.
The suspended individuals consist of Corporator Aparup Narayan Raut, Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra, Debashis Pradhan, Sachikant Swain, and Sanjeev Mishra.
In response to an FIR filed by Sahoo, the police have already apprehended three BJP workers: Raut, Mohapatra, and Pradhan due to their alleged involvement in the attack.
On a related note, senior BJP figure Jagannath Pradhan claimed that the accusations directed at him by Mayor Sulochana Das and other BJD leaders were merely political attacks.
“I strongly condemn the assault on the Additional Commissioner. Actions have been taken against those responsible, and the Chief Minister has also conferred with BMC officials and relevant stakeholders. We fully support Ratnakar Sahoo. Such incidents are unacceptable,” stated Pradhan.
He further mentioned that if someone from his constituency invokes his name during a crime, it does not imply his involvement.
“How could such an event transpire within a secure office setting, especially with the Mayor present? It seems there was a deliberate attempt to politicize the issue after filming the incident and sharing it with the media,” he alleged, raising concerns about the security protocols at the BMC office.
Providing context for the incident, Pradhan asserted that the public discontent against the BMC's senior officer was linked to an issue involving a Swachh Sathi—a sanitation volunteer affiliated with Mission Shakti—from his constituency.
“She was tasked with mobilizing beneficiaries for a significant government event celebrating one year of the State Government’s establishment, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was expected to attend. Despite fulfilling her role, individuals associated with the BJD and the Additional Commissioner targeted her for her contributions,” Pradhan alleged.
He mentioned that he had raised concerns with the BMC Commissioner upon learning about the harassment the volunteer faced from officials.
“The individuals involved merely visited the BMC office to address the situation. Unfortunately, a confrontation ensued that could have been avoided, but the Mayor exacerbated the issue unnecessarily,” he added.
Conversely, the concerned Swachh Sathi, Rebati Rout, alleged that BMC Additional Commissioner Sahoo threatened her with job loss for aiding participants at Prime Minister Modi's rally in Bhubaneswar.
Notably, around 11:30 A.M. on Monday, during a public grievance meeting attended by various officers, staff, and the general public at the BMC office, six to seven unidentified individuals unlawfully entered the premises and assaulted Sahoo after questioning him about a phone call with BJP leader Jagannath Pradhan.
The Odisha Administrative Service Association (OASA) expressed solidarity with Sahoo, announcing plans for a mass leave starting Tuesday.
However, following discussions with Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, the association postponed its protest initiative, with the Chief Minister assuring rigorous action against those responsible for the assault.
