BJP's Strategic Focus on Localized Issues for Bengal 2026 Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal is honing in on specific local issues to finalize its election manifesto for the upcoming Assembly elections.
“While there are overarching issues that resonate across various regions in the state amid the current complex political landscape, we are also addressing specific local concerns. This time, our emphasis is on detailing these localized issues and our solutions in the manifesto,” stated a member of the BJP state committee involved in the manifesto preparation.
Additionally, a separate mini-manifesto specifically for the eight districts of North Bengal—Cooch Behar, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Malda—is being planned.
“As always, our comprehensive manifesto addressing state-wide issues will be presented. However, we are particularly focused on creating a mini-manifesto for North Bengal this time,” the committee member indicated.
According to Shankar Ghosh, the Chief Whip of the BJP’s legislative party and a legislator from Siliguri in North Bengal, the development of a distinct North Bengal-specific manifesto is being tailored to meet the needs, demands, and aspirations of the local populace.
“Our party is currently undertaking a ‘Sankalp Patra Paramarsha Yatra’ (Manifesto Consultation Drive), where we have set up drop boxes across various locations in West Bengal to gather public opinions for the manifesto. Based on critical feedback from these drop boxes in North Bengal, we aim to produce a dedicated manifesto for the region,” Ghosh noted.
Political analysts suggest that the creation of this separate North Bengal manifesto is influenced by the fact that while the Trinamool Congress leads in South Bengal, the narrative is quite different in North Bengal.
“During the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress performed well across numerous districts, except for a few like Bankura, Purulia, and East Midnapore. The BJP maintained a stronghold in North Bengal, winning 30 out of 54 Assembly constituencies. Preserving this electoral strength in North Bengal is essential for the BJP, which is why the proposal for a distinct manifesto for the region is being prioritized,” a local political analyst commented.
