Kolkata, Nov 14 (NationPress) The BJP’s central leadership has instructed the state unit to exercise great caution when suggesting names of celebrity candidates, particularly from the film industry, for the upcoming Assembly elections set for next year.

A member of the state committee stated that the top leadership has urged them to evaluate three key aspects before putting forth a celebrity's name for candidacy.

“The primary aspect is the extent to which the proposed celebrity aligns with the core political values of the BJP. The second is their understanding of the social and geographical dynamics of the Assembly constituencies from which they would run. Finally, it is crucial to assess their willingness to stay engaged with party activities regardless of the outcome,” noted the party member.

This decision to be selective with celebrity candidates stems from disappointing results in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, where many celebrity nominees lost.

In 2021, the BJP introduced several candidates from the entertainment sector. However, apart from Agnimitra Paul, a fashion designer turned politician, and actor Hiran Chatterjee, the majority faced defeat.

“While the leadership recognizes that wins and losses are inherent to elections, what was particularly concerning was the immediate detachment of many losing celebrity candidates from the party post-results, with several joining the Trinamool Congress shortly after. Consequently, our central leadership is determined to be very selective in choosing celebrity candidates this time around,” explained the committee member.

Recently, central leaders such as B.L. Santhosh and Bhupendra Yadav have held multiple discussions with state leaders regarding strategies for the 2026 Assembly elections, emphasizing the need for caution in recommending celebrity candidates.

Point of View

The BJP's cautious approach towards celebrity candidates reflects a broader trend in political strategy, where authenticity and alignment with party values are becoming increasingly critical in electoral success. As party dynamics evolve, the focus on genuine connections with voters is vital.
