Is the Bengal BJP Shifting Focus to Grassroots Candidates for Assembly Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 9 (NationPress) The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is focusing on a more organized approach to select potential candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections, prioritizing individuals from the grassroots over well-known public personalities, especially those associated with the film industry.
A member of the state committee mentioned that this shift towards grassroots candidates is a lesson learned from previous elections, particularly the 2021 Assembly polls.
“In the lead-up to the 2021 elections, several celebrities joined our ranks and many were nominated as candidates. However, following the election results, most of these celebrities distanced themselves from the party, with many quickly aligning with the ruling Trinamool Congress. This time, the process of candidate selection is being conducted quietly and systematically, without any unnecessary publicity,” the committee member stated.
Additionally, the state unit plans to present two distinct lists for each of West Bengal's 294 Assembly constituencies to the party leadership. One list will include three names of favored candidates, while the other will list three candidates who are less preferred.
“The state unit may also provide brief explanations for the three names on the ‘preferred’ list and the three names on the ‘not preferred’ list. However, the ultimate decision regarding candidate selection will rest with the party's high command,” the committee member elaborated.
Simultaneously, the BJP's West Bengal unit is striving to gauge public sentiment prior to the state elections and before finalizing their election manifesto.
Recently, the party's state unit initiated the 'Sankalp Patra Paramarsha Yatra' (Manifesto Consultation Drive), which includes placing drop boxes in 1,000 locations throughout West Bengal to gather public feedback on the election manifesto.
