Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) As the preliminary phase of selecting party candidates from the 294 constituencies in West Bengal for the upcoming Assembly elections this year is underway, the leadership of Trinamool Congress is contemplating alterations in the constituencies of several influential ministers and seasoned party legislators.
According to party insiders, two rounds of exclusive meetings involving a select few leaders from the party's upper echelons have already occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, hosted at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's residence in Kalighat, Kolkata. These discussions focused on the potential candidates for the Assembly elections slated for later this year.
During these meetings, names of current cabinet members and veteran MLAs were tabled, with deliberations on their possible candidacies from different constituencies.
Moreover, the discussions also encompassed names of existing party legislators who might receive re-nomination and be assigned strictly for organizational roles.
Another key topic of conversation was achieving an optimal balance between the 'old guards' and 'new faces' on the candidate list.
Lastly, there was a focus on including new non-political personalities from the entertainment and media sectors in the candidate roster. 'Expect some significant surprises in the party's candidate list this time,' disclosed the sources from Trinamool Congress.
In parallel, discussions have commenced regarding the selection of candidates for the upcoming elections for the five Rajya Sabha seats from West Bengal on March 16. The Trinamool Congress is poised to secure four out of five seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to settle for one based on the current numerical strengths of both parties in the state Assembly.
As per party sources, among the four assured seats for the Trinamool Congress in the Upper House, three will be filled by core party leaders, while one will feature a non-political figure with an extensive network in national political circles.
