Kolkata, July 31 (NationPress) The BJP's West Bengal unit is advocating for the re-nomination of all party legislators in the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for next year.
Nevertheless, the ultimate decision will rest with the BJP's central leadership.
Currently, the BJP holds 66 seats in the 294-member state Assembly.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, BJP candidates were victorious in 77 Assembly constituencies. However, this number has dwindled to 66 over the past four years due to two main factors: the losses in subsequent bypolls and some party legislators switching allegiance to the ruling Trinamool Congress.
A member of the BJP's state committee commented that the state leadership would urge the central leadership to expedite a decision regarding the re-nomination of the 66 party legislators. This would enable them to focus on their respective Assembly areas without the burden of other organizational responsibilities.
"The upcoming festive season in West Bengal, commencing with Durga Puja at the end of September, presents an excellent opportunity for elected representatives to engage in extensive public relations efforts in their constituencies. We anticipate that our central leadership will communicate their decision regarding the re-nomination proposal for all current party legislators before that time," the state committee member stated.
If the central leadership approves the proposal, two of the five state general secretaries currently in the party's West Bengal state committee will be relieved of their organizational duties, as they are also legislators.
Similarly, if any of the three remaining state general secretaries are nominated for the 2026 Assembly elections, they too will be relieved of their organizational roles.
"We expect more clarity at the conclusion of the four-day organizational session of the state unit of the BJP, beginning Friday, which will involve all central observers of the party for West Bengal," the state committee member added.
