Are the BJP's Strategies Shifting for the Bengal 2026 Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 27 (NationPress) As the West Bengal Assembly elections approach next year, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is intensifying its efforts on constituencies where its candidates faced close defeats in the previous two electoral events.
The party has established criteria to pinpoint those areas where the defeat margins were below 10,000 votes, considering results from both the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls and the assembly-specific outcomes of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“Despite a decrease in the number of winning seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections compared to 2019, our assembly-wise performance has improved compared to the 2021 Assembly polls. After a thorough examination of each of the 294 assembly constituencies from 2021 and 2024, we have focused on those constituencies with narrow defeat margins,” stated a BJP state committee member.
He further noted that in many of these constituencies where the defeat margins were 10,000 votes or fewer, a significant portion of votes for CPI(M)-led Left Front candidates contributed to victories for Trinamool Congress candidates. “Consequently, we are concentrating on winning over non-BJP but anti-Trinamool Congress votes in 2026,” added the state committee member.
Following the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, the BJP became the largest opposition party in the state, securing 77 seats. An analysis of the assembly results in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections revealed that BJP candidates led in 90 constituencies. The number of seats needed to gain power in West Bengal is 148.
Meanwhile, the state committee member mentioned that the party is closely monitoring the assembly-wise removal of voters' names amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state.
As of now, 58.20 lakh voters have been removed from the draft voters' list published on December 16, with the claims and objections hearing process starting recently.
The BJP anticipates that the total number of removed voters may exceed 1 crore in the final voters' list, which is set to be published in February next year. Shortly after this, the Election Commission of India will announce the polling dates for the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections.
