Kolkata, April 21 (NationPress) A lasting political resolution in the Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Kurseong hills of North Bengal is anticipated within the next month, contingent on the BJP securing victory in the state's Assembly elections, declared Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday.

“On May 6, we will finalize the matter and unveil a solution that will bring joy to our Gorkha brothers. The Congress and Trinamool Congress have long neglected our patriotic Gorkha community. For the past nine years, I have visited the hills, and I will present a resolution to this enduring issue by May 6, tailored to the aspirations of our Gorkha brothers,” stated Shah during a campaign rally at Sukna in Kurseong.

He emphasized that the BJP is attuned to the feelings and challenges faced by the Gorkha community, asserting that only the BJP can effectively address their issues.

Shah criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government for its inadequate focus on the development of North Bengal, highlighting the state government’s minimal budget allocation for the region.

“In the previous budget, a meager Rs 2,000 crore was set aside for all of North Bengal, while a staggering Rs 5,800 crore was allocated for minority and madrasa education. The people of North Bengal can no longer tolerate this disparity,” Shah remarked.

He accused the Chief Minister of attempting to undermine the rich Gorkha culture. “The Gorkhas have a proud history. Mamata Banerjee seeks to obliterate that heritage, just as Congress and CPI(M) did previously. It is time to end this injustice against our Gorkha brothers and sisters,” Shah asserted.

Additionally, he noted that the West Bengal government has consistently failed to send delegates to the tripartite meetings called by the Union Home Minister to discuss a lasting political resolution in the hills.

“Since I assumed office as Union Home Minister, I have convened at least three meetings on this matter. Yet, Mamata Banerjee has never sent a representative. I want to convey to the Chief Minister that we do not rely on her to resolve this issue. I understand what our Gorkha brothers and sisters desire. Therefore, the solution will be reached accordingly,” he concluded.

Point of View

The BJP aims to position itself as a champion for the region's needs, contrasting sharply with the current government's track record. This development underscores the importance of addressing regional issues in the political landscape of West Bengal.
