Kolkata, April 15 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Wednesday that the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has rejected three proposals over the past one and a half years aimed at addressing the concerns of the residents in the Darjeeling hills, including Kalimpong and Kurseong, and the demands of the Gorkhas living there.
Shah was scheduled to deliver a speech at a public gathering at Lebong Ground in Darjeeling on Wednesday morning, but due to adverse weather conditions, his helicopter was unable to land. Instead, a seven-minute video message was presented at the rally.
“I have proposed meetings three times in the past year and a half to discuss issues concerning the hills and the Gorkhas. However, Mamata Banerjee did not send any representatives to New Delhi for discussions. She appears to be uninterested in ensuring justice and legitimate rights for the Gorkhas in Darjeeling. But worry not, as our first priority after the Bharatiya Janata Party takes power in the state on May 5 will be to address the Gorkhas' issues. We will also withdraw all complaints and cases against the Gorkhas related to the Gorkhaland movement in the past,” HM Shah conveyed in his video message.
Expressing regret over his inability to attend the public meeting, he announced plans to return to Sukna in Darjeeling district on April 21, coinciding with the last day of campaigning for the first phase of the elections on April 23.
“Having traveled extensively across the state recently, I am confident that the BJP will secure victory in West Bengal this time. The issues of illegal infiltration, corruption, and violence will be eradicated,” Shah affirmed.
Additionally, HM Shah is set to speak at three other public meetings that day in Rajganj (Jalpaiguri district), Falakata (Alipurduar district), and Tufanganj (Cooch Behar district).
