Darjeeling, April 21 (NationPress) Leaders from the BJP, including Bimal Gurung, the President of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha, expressed their approval of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's pledge regarding the Gorkha community. He stated that if the party secures victory in the forthcoming two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal, they will strive to address the Gorkha issues 'within six months'.
During a rally held on the final day of campaigning ahead of the first phase of polling on April 23, HM Shah made this commitment.
He declared, 'Once a BJP government is established in Bengal, we will ensure that within six months, every Gorkha will wear a smile, as we find a viable solution. The Congress and Trinamool Congress have wronged not just Darjeeling, but my Gorkha brothers and sisters as well. We are committed to resolving the Gorkhas' issues in line with their wishes.'
Bimal Gurung expressed to IANS that HM Shah's speech exceeded their expectations.
He highlighted that the Home Minister discussed solutions for Gorkha issues, including those related to women, youth, highways, and a cancer hospital. 'Everything he mentioned was positive,' Gurung remarked.
Affirming his support for the BJP, he urged, 'The Gorkha community always acts in the nation's interest, and now the BJP is honoring our dignity. I encourage everyone to cast their votes for the BJP this time.'
BJP MP from Darjeeling, Raju Bista, conveyed his appreciation to HM Shah for acknowledging the challenges faced by the 'Dooars'.
'I don't recall any previous Home Minister being as attuned to the Gorkha issues as he is. This moment is historic for our community as he has promised to address our concerns,' he stated to reporters.
He criticized the government led by the Trinamool Congress for corruption and illegal immigration, asserting that '(Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee will be ousted in 2026, and Bengal will be purged of corruption. Those in power through illegal votes are destined for removal.'
Similarly, BJP MLA from Darjeeling, Neeraj Zimba Tamang, praised the Home Minister for addressing the Gorkha issues.
'Home Minister Amit Shah has not only made a promise but has shown a commitment that the long-standing issues of the Gorkhas will be resolved according to their desires. We are grateful and optimistic that the BJP government will follow through,' he told IANS.
