Has Congress Overlooked Majuli While BJP Focuses on Modern Infrastructure?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 13 (NationPress) Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the state government is making a concentrated effort to develop modern infrastructure in Majuli, which is central to Assam's Vaishnavite culture. He emphasized that the long-standing neglect experienced under prior Congress administrations is now being rectified through what he termed 'hardcore' infrastructure initiatives.
In a message posted on X, CM Sarma pointed out that Majuli, recognized as the world's largest inhabited river island and a significant hub for neo-Vaishnavite heritage, has faced challenges due to insufficient connectivity and basic amenities.
He accused successive Congress governments of failing to prioritize the island's progress, despite its vast cultural, spiritual, and tourism importance.
'Majuli has been consistently overlooked by the Congress. There has been minimal effort to enhance facilities here. With the support of the people, we are now addressing decades of inaction through concrete infrastructure development,' the Chief Minister remarked.
Sarma highlighted that the current administration is prioritizing projects related to road connectivity, ferry services, flood-resistant infrastructure, and public amenities in Majuli to elevate the living standards of its residents and bolster cultural institutions like the satrias.
He added that improved infrastructure is vital not only for locals but also for safeguarding Majuli's unique Vaishnavite heritage and promoting sustainable tourism.
Officials noted that various initiatives aimed at fortifying embankments, enhancing all-weather connectivity, and upgrading civic facilities are either underway or have recently been completed.
The government is also concentrating on improving access to healthcare, education, and digital services on the island.
The Chief Minister asserted that development and cultural conservation must coexist, emphasizing that infrastructure projects in Majuli are being executed with careful consideration of its ecological sensitivity and cultural identity.
He reaffirmed the government's dedication to preserving the island’s essence while ensuring it keeps pace with the broader developmental objectives of Assam.
Sarma's comments arrive amidst an increase in political exchanges between the ruling BJP and the Congress, with the Chief Minister consistently accusing the opposition of years of neglect.
He stated that the residents of Majuli have entrusted their faith in the current administration, which is committed to delivering tangible outcomes.
'Our goal is to guarantee that Majuli receives the respect, facilities, and development it rightfully deserves, while maintaining its spiritual and cultural integrity,' he added.
