New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) At least eight individuals lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries due to a catastrophic explosion at an ordnance factory located in Bhandara district of Maharashtra on Friday.

The explosion took place around 10.30 a.m., according to District Collector Sanjay Kolte. Rescue teams and medical personnel are currently engaged in searching for any remaining survivors, while firefighters work diligently to manage the situation.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed the fatalities, stating, "Initial reports indicate that eight individuals were killed, and seven others were injured as a result of the explosion." He made this statement during a press conference held by the Association for Industrial Development in Nagpur. The Minister paused the media event to express his condolences and observe a moment of silence.

Authorities stated, "A blast occurred at the ordnance factory in Bhandara this morning. Rescue and medical teams have been dispatched to search for survivors, and rescue operations are currently in progress."

As per District Collector Kolte, a roof collapsed, trapping at least 12 individuals underneath it during the explosion.

Five people have been rescued, and an excavator is being employed to clear the debris.

The explosion was so powerful that its sound traveled up to 5 km away, and thick smoke was visible rising from the factory in a video captured from a distance.

The cause of the explosion is currently unknown, and an investigation is underway.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wrote on X in Marathi, "Reports indicate that 13 to 14 workers were trapped after the roof collapse caused by the explosion in the ordnance factory at Bhandara district. Five of them have been safely evacuated. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police are present at the site, providing all necessary assistance. Teams from SDRF and Nagpur Municipal Corporation have also been requested for rescue operations and will arrive shortly. The district administration is collaborating with the defense forces for rescue efforts. Medical assistance teams are also on standby."
