Bomb Threats Target Courts in West Bengal Again
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 25 (NationPress) Multiple courts across West Bengal received bomb threats once again on Wednesday, following similar alerts that were issued the previous day via email.
The emails were directed to judges serving in various district courts.
As per police reports, the initial bomb scare emerged at the Asansol District and Sessions Court, where a threatening email was sent to the West Burdwan District Judge.
Insider sources revealed that the message stated, "A bomb has been planted in the court and will detonate shortly."
In response to the alarming news, Asansol-Durgapur Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhruba Das promptly arrived at the scene.
The situation was similarly tense at the Suri District Court located in Birbhum district, where the district judge also received a threatening communication. A hearing was scheduled to occur at noon, but after the email was received, panic ensued, leading to an evacuation of the courtroom.
Authorities quickly notified the police and bomb disposal squad. However, after conducting thorough searches until 2 p.m., no suspicious devices were discovered in either the Asansol or Suri district courts.
In addition to the incidents in West Bengal, the Dhanbad district court in the neighboring state of Jharkhand also reported a bomb scare on the same day. Threatening emails claimed that RDX was hidden within the court premises, prompting an immediate evacuation and search by local authorities.
This incident followed a day after bomb threats were reported at seven courts in West Bengal, including the prestigious Calcutta High Court, which caused significant anxiety among judges and legal practitioners.
In reaction to these threats, the state administration convened an urgent high-level meeting at the state secretariat. During a press briefing, State Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty emphasized that the responsibility for court security lies with the state government, assuring there was no cause for alarm.
The Chief Secretary urged the public to disregard rumors. Concurrently, the Cyber Crime Branch of the police has initiated an investigation to identify the authors of these threatening emails.
