New Delhi, June 30 (NationPress) As India forges ahead in its quest for defence indigenisation and self-sufficiency, Brazil has expressed significant interest in acquiring indigenous defence innovations. Discussions regarding this topic are anticipated to take place during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the Latin American country, beginning July 6, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday.
"Indeed, we will engage in talks regarding defence cooperation with Brazil. We are exploring opportunities for joint research, technology sharing, and training exchanges. Discussions are ongoing regarding the types of cooperation feasible and which defence platforms we might provide to Brazil; however, progress has been slow. We have broadly identified a few areas that appear to interest the Brazilian government," stated MEA's Secretary East, P. Kumaran, during a media briefing ahead of the Prime Minister's visit.
PM Modi is set to embark on a five-nation tour starting July 2. His journey will include a stop in Rio de Janeiro for the 17th BRICS Leaders’ Summit, following visits to Ghana (July 2-3), Trinidad and Tobago (July 3-4), and Argentina (July 4-5).
After attending the BRICS Summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, PM Modi will head to Brasilia for a State Visit, where he will engage in bilateral talks aimed at enhancing the strategic partnership between the two countries across various sectors such as trade, defence, energy, space, technology, agriculture, health, and cultural linkages.
"Brazil is interested in secure communication systems for battlefield use and Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs). They possess Scorpene submarines and wish to collaborate with us on their maintenance. Additionally, they seem inclined towards the Akash Air Defence Systems, Coastal Surveillance Systems, and Garuda Artillery Guns. Brazil is also keen on establishing joint ventures in the defence industry, along with cooperative R&D and system co-development efforts. We utilize the Embraer platform to develop reconnaissance systems, creating ample opportunities for collaboration given Brazil's robust aircraft industry," Secretary Kumaran added.
India and Brazil have collaborated on developing Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft and have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Embraer, a Brazilian aerospace firm, and Mahindra to work together on the C-390 Millennium multi-mission transport aircraft.
Similar to various other nations, including those in Latin America, Brazil has shown a strong desire to procure Indian defence equipment as Prime Minister Modi's administration has significantly enhanced the nation's defence capabilities over the past 11 years.
India's defence exports reached an unprecedented total of approximately Rs 24,000 crore in the Financial Year 2024-25, with government ambitions set to elevate this figure to Rs 50,000 crore by 2029.
With PM Modi and President Lula having met on four occasions since 2023, the strategic partners India and Brazil have fortified their bilateral relations through various institutional frameworks including Joint Commission Meetings, Strategic Dialogues, Foreign Office Consultations, Trade Monitoring Mechanisms, and other collaborative working groups.
The Prime Minister's previous visit to Brazil for the G20 Summit in November 2024 marks this upcoming journey as his fourth since 2014.
President Lula also expressed solidarity against terrorism during a recent phone call with Prime Minister Modi, following the tragic April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
