Kolkata, July 16 (NationPress) A significant gap in a strategic high-altitude road leading to the Gogra Hot Springs region in Ladakh has been successfully closed, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd.
On July 10, GRSE Ltd. fabricated and launched a multi-span, 280-feet long double-lane modular bridge at KM 72.625 on the Phobrang-Marshimik-La Hot-Spring Road. This bridge features two spans, each measuring 140 feet in length, and was handed over to Project Himank of the BRO.
“This marks an unprecedented achievement in India as it is the first time a multi-span double-lane modular bridge has been launched in such a short timeframe of just 20 days. This remarkable feat was accomplished in one of India's most remote and challenging terrains, where the team faced extreme cold weather conditions in a critical forward area along India's borders. This development enhances seamless connectivity for deployment of troops and equipment for the Indian Army,” a senior GRSE official stated.
The double-lane steel bridge, engineered by GRSE, stands as the only indigenous solution of its type. This initiative aligns with India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the BRO, GRSE has already delivered 56 bridges across the nation, many of which are situated in strategic areas.
“These bridges feature a carriageway width of 7.5 meters, allowing for two-way traffic as per the specifications established by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Constructed from high tensile steel of Grade E-410, they ensure strength, durability, and suitability for low temperature applications. The galvanized surface finish allows for easier maintenance and extended service life. Load Class IRC 70R facilitates the movement of both wheeled and tracked vehicles of up to 100/70 MT. The modular design ensures simpler transportation of bridge components to remote areas and quicker erection in a span of just 30-45 days,” the official added.
In 2020, there was a stand-off between the Indian and Chinese Armies in the Gogra Hot Springs area, with both sides amassing forces near the Line of Actual Control (LAC). While troops and equipment have been withdrawn by both sides in a de-escalation effort, disputes concerning patrolling rights in that area remain.
In August 2022, GRSE achieved a significant milestone by becoming the sole Indian organization to receive Green Channel Certification for portable steel bridges (Bailey Type) from the Indian Army.
GRSE's Portable Steel Bridge Division has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation through dedicated research and development, resulting in enhanced versions of portable bridge designs. To date, GRSE has supplied over 5,900 portable steel bridges to the Indian Army, BRO, NHIDCL, State Public Works Departments, and various government agencies.
Originally designed for disaster management, these adaptable bridges have gained international recognition, being exported to friendly nations such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.
