BRS Lawmakers Demonstrate Against Handcuffing of Arrested Farmer in Telangana

Hyderabad, Dec 16 (NationPress) The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) held a demonstration at the Telangana Assembly complex in response to the alleged mistreatment of farmers detained related to the Lagacherla incident. BRS legislators arrived at the Assembly carrying placards and shouting slogans regarding the handcuffing of one of the detained farmers.

They were intercepted by police and Assembly security personnel, who stated that they did not have permission to enter the premises with placards.

BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao and prominent leader T. Harish Rao were among the MLAs who participated in the demonstration. They called for the immediate release of all detained farmers.

A farmer, who was held in Sangareddy Jail, was handcuffed when he was taken to a hospital after reporting chest pain on December 12. The tribal farmer Hirya Naik was arrested in connection with an assault on officials during a public hearing regarding land acquisition for a pharmaceutical cluster in Lagacherla village, located in Vikarabad district.

Taking the incident seriously, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy ordered an investigation. The same day, Sangareddy Central Prison Superintendent Santosh Roy and Jailer P. Sanjeeva Reddy were suspended.

In the meantime, BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao criticized the Congress government regarding the arrests of farmers and the recent detention of actor Allu Arjun. He also took issue with the Chief Minister over his frequent trips to the national capital.

“As the Telangana Assembly intends to discuss 'Tourism policy', the two particular areas where the Congress Government has made significant strides in this sector are 1) Delhi Tourism - Over 100 trips by the CM and all Ministers combined! 2) Jail Tourism -- 40 farmers from Kodangal in jail -- Actors in jail even after bail -- Social Media activists being jailed -- LnT CFO being threatened with jail,” Rama Rao posted on ‘X’.

Furthermore, the BRS staged a walk-out from the Assembly regarding the issue of non-payment of long-overdue bills owed to former sarpanches. Former sarpanches and other public representatives have been demanding the government settle bills totaling Rs.1,300 crore.

They assert that they had borrowed funds to undertake various development projects in their villages. Both the ruling Congress and opposition BRS blamed each other for the outstanding bills.

Minister for Panchayat Raj Seethakka stated that the Congress government inherited the debts from the prior administration. She mentioned that if the former Finance Minister Harish Rao had authorized a file, all outstanding bills would have been settled.

In response, Harish Rao asserted that the BRS government allocates Rs 275 crore each month to gram panchayats under the Palle Pragathi program. He claimed that the prior government indicated that Rs 3,300 crore had been disbursed to gram panchayats since the program's inception to enhance village development.

The BRS leader condemned the Congress government for not clearing the dues of impoverished sarpanches, MPTCs, ZPTCs, and small contractors over the past year. Characterizing the government's response to the crucial questions raised by them as ‘irresponsible’, the BRS staged a walk-out.
