Kolkata, Nov 5 (NationPress) A confrontation erupted between members of the Border Security Force (BSF) and local police in the Nadia district of West Bengal regarding the custody of confiscated Phensedyl (an illicit cough syrup). The incident took place in the Chapra police station area of the Krishnanagar police district around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, as reported by police officials on Wednesday.
At least three police officers sustained injuries during the altercation between the central and state forces. Once the situation was stabilized, a BSF personnel was arrested for their role in the incident. However, no official comments have been issued by the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the BSF, South Bengal Frontier, or the Superintendent of the Krishnanagar Police District regarding the matter.
According to police sources, some packages were being unloaded from a vehicle on the Krishnanagar-Karimpur state highway near the Seemanagar area of Chapra police station last evening.
Local residents discovered a substantial quantity of the banned cough syrup 'Phensedyl' inside the packages. They promptly alerted the Chapra police station about this discovery.
Officers from the Chapra police station arrived swiftly at the scene, seizing the prohibited cough syrups and transporting them in their vehicle. Concurrently, BSF members from the Seemanagar 32 Battalion arrived, seeking custody of the confiscated cough syrups. The police, however, declined to hand them over, citing procedural regulations, which escalated into a dispute between the two groups. This disagreement soon turned physical, prompting additional police personnel and a BSF team to intervene and restore order.
A police source indicated that three police officers were injured in the confrontation and required immediate medical attention at Chapra Hospital.
Sources reported that one of the injured officers had sustained serious injuries. Following the clash, a BSF personnel was detained. In response to the incident, senior BSF officials arrived at the scene alongside the Additional Superintendent of Police and the DSP of the Krishnanagar Police District. Ongoing discussions between both parties were noted, according to sources.
BSF representatives asserted that they received intelligence indicating that banned cough syrups were being transported to the Chapra police station border. Upon their attempt to confiscate the syrups, the state police allegedly obstructed their efforts. Conversely, police officials claimed that after following the necessary legal procedures to seize the 'Phensedyl', the BSF personnel insisted on taking custody of the syrups, leading to the ensuing conflict.
