Kolkata, March 5 (NationPress) DIG and Spokesperson, N K Pandey, from the South Bengal Frontier of BSF reported on Wednesday that a Bangladeshi woman was apprehended with 24 carat gold bangles at the Petrapole border in the North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal.
“At approximately 8:20 am on Tuesday, personnel from the 145 Bn BSF conducted routine inspections of individuals entering India at the ICP, Petrapole. When a female constable used a hand-held metal detector on the woman, it produced a distinct beep. Upon investigation, they discovered that she was adorned with three gold bangles on each wrist. There was no indication of these items in her travel documentation,” stated DIG Pandey.
He further explained that the woman was requested to take off the bangles for testing.
“An expert confirmed that the gold had a purity of 99.75 percent. The accused claimed that the bangles were a gift from her husband. The total weight of the bangles was 103.090 grams, with a value of Rs 8,82,966,” he added.
DIG Pandey mentioned that the woman asserted she was traveling to Kolkata for medical treatment and hailed from Comilla in Bangladesh.
“Nevertheless, she was taken into custody according to legal protocols,” he stated.
He noted that the individual was later handed over to the appropriate authorities for subsequent legal action.
“Without the swift actions of the BSF personnel, the gold, typically seen in the form of bars or biscuits, could have been smuggled into India,” Pandey remarked.
He also suggested that this might indicate a new strategy employed by smugglers.
