Kolkata, July 11 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) successfully apprehended two smugglers and confiscated a substantial amount of narcotics along the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in the North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal on Friday.
A soldier from the 143 Bn BSF suffered injuries to his left arm after being assaulted with a machete, commonly referred to as a Dah.
“Despite enduring a life-threatening attack, the BSF personnel, although initially outnumbered, remained steadfast at their posts and exercised utmost restraint, thereby preventing a significant drug-smuggling operation from India to Bangladesh,” stated N K Pandey, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier, BSF.
The incident occurred around 1:50 a.m. when a jawan stationed at the Tarali-1 Border Outpost noticed three to four individuals approaching the border fence from the Indian side, carrying heavy loads.
The jawan confronted them, but the group was undeterred. Instead of retreating, they began verbally assaulting the BSF personnel and hurling stones. They also aimed powerful torches at his eyes to temporarily blind him.
“The valiant jawan held his ground and discharged a shot from his Pump-Action Gun (PAG) into the air to intimidate the attackers. Rather than dispersing, the assailants surrounded him and struck him with the Dah, injuring his arm. Other troops arrived at the scene just in time, and the smugglers attempted to escape, taking advantage of the darkness and nearby structures. The jawans pursued them and successfully captured two individuals,” the DIG reported.
A thorough search of the area resulted in the recovery of 10 kg of Ganja and 100 bottles of banned Phensedyl cough syrup. A machete was also seized. Following interrogation, the two suspects were handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action, along with the confiscated items.
Pandey highlighted the challenges faced by BSF jawans as they encounter violence during their service.
“Our personnel continue to fulfill their duties with remarkable bravery, commitment, and vigilance amid such daunting circumstances. Despite ongoing discussions with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to inform them about forced infiltrations and the persistent attacks by Bangladeshi criminals, no substantial measures have been taken from their end. This negligence has further emboldened smugglers and criminals. Nonetheless, BSF members remain fully capable of securing the borders and protecting the nation in all situations,” he affirmed.
