Srinagar, Jan 12 (NationPress) A Border Security Force (BSF) trooper tragically lost his life on Monday due to a fire incident in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir.
A statement from the fire and emergency services department indicated that, “A fire was reported at Madar, Bandipora, at approximately 2:34 a.m. today. Upon receiving the alert, fire and emergency teams from the District Fire Headquarters Bandipora were dispatched to the scene. Given the severity of the flames, additional reinforcements were quickly mobilized.”
“Upon arrival, it was observed that the entire wooden barrack, covered with GCI sheets, was completely engulfed in flames. The fire's intensity was extraordinarily high, hindering any immediate search and rescue operations. The barrack consisted of three rooms; two were occupied by BSF jawans for residential purposes, while one served as a barber shop,” the statement reported.
“Firefighting efforts commenced promptly, and the fire was eventually brought under control. Following the cooling operation, one body was retrieved from the wreckage of the burned wooden barrack,” officials confirmed.
The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Kumar, a washerman with the 62 Battalion BSF. His body has been handed over to the higher authorities of 62 BN BSF for further legal procedures.
“The operation was led by LFM Ghulam Nabi under the direct oversight of Assistant Director Mohammad Arif Mir, with effective coordination facilitated by Mobilising Officer Aijaz Ahmad Shah. The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” the statement added.
Further details regarding the fire incident are pending.
Many fire incidents during the winter season are often attributed to electrical faults and various heating appliances. Occasionally, electric short circuits, or overheating from wood or charcoal heating appliances, lead to unfortunate fire incidents in winter in Kashmir. In some instances, even overheating of electric blankets has resulted in catastrophic fires in the past.
