Patna, July 29 (NationPress) The Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar officially opened the highly anticipated Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum-cum-Smriti Stupa in Vaishali on Tuesday, marking a significant cultural and spiritual landmark developed over six years at an investment of Rs 550.48 crore.
Spanning an impressive 72 acres, this monument complex bridges the districts of Vaishali and Muzaffarpur, serving as a homage to Bihar's global Buddhist heritage.
The extensive site, constructed by the Building Construction Department, features a library, visitor center, museum block, amphitheater, meditation center, cafeteria, a 500 KW solar power plant, parking facilities, and other advanced amenities, all crafted to elevate the experience for both local and international visitors.
On this momentous occasion, CM Nitish Kumar was accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, Minister Vijay Chaudhary, and other NDA officials.
Buddhist monks from 15 nations graced the inauguration, engaging in ceremonial worship before the CM thoroughly inspected the site.
A notable feature of the event was the placement of the holy bone urn of Lord Buddha on the museum's first floor, a revered relic unearthed during the 1958–62 excavation of the Mud Stupa. This significant artifact is acknowledged as one of the most authentic relics, even cited by the renowned Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang.
The Smriti Stupa itself is an architectural wonder, constructed using 42,373 sandstone blocks sourced from Bansi Paharpur in Rajasthan, utilizing a tongue-and-groove method to ensure both visual appeal and seismic resilience.
A magnificent statue of Lord Buddha, crafted by artisans from Odisha, further enriches the site's spiritual ambiance.
Prior to the inauguration, Nitish Kumar expressed on the social media platform X, “I am excited to announce that the Buddha Samyak Darshan Museum-cum-Smriti Stupa, Vaishali, is set to open on July 29, 2025. Monks and Buddhists from around 15 nations will be part of this proud moment for all Biharis.”
He stressed that he personally oversaw the project's progress to ensure timely and high-quality completion.
The CM highlighted Vaishali's historical significance in Buddhism, noting it as the site where the first republican governance was established, and where women were first included in the Buddhist Sangha.
Bihar Tourism Department Secretary Pranav Kumar stated, “This museum-cum-stupa stands as a magnificent symbol of Bihar’s cultural and Buddhist heritage. It will not only position Vaishali on the global Buddhist tourism map but also rejuvenate local culture, tourism, and employment prospects.”
Its close proximity to the historic Pushkarni pond and the original Mud Stupa site enhances its cultural value.
The site's eco-friendly design and lush landscaping aim to provide visitors with a spiritually enriching and environmentally conscious experience.
