Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) A bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday demanded a response from the West Bengal government regarding the cessation of financial aid under a state-backed women’s welfare scheme in a specific village panchayat located in East Midnapore, the home district of Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, instructed the state authorities to provide a detailed report to the court within the next two weeks.
This directive came in response to a public interest litigation filed at the Calcutta High Court which accused the government of halting financial assistance under the Laxmir Bhandar scheme for 7,000 women in Bagcha Village Panchayat of the Moyna Assembly constituency in East Midnapore district, represented by Ashok Dinda, a former cricketer affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Laxmir Bhandar scheme provides a monthly financial support to women in the state, offering Rs 1,200 per month to women from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, and Rs 1,000 to other women.
On Thursday, the petitioner’s counsel, senior lawyer Bilwadal Bhattacharya, argued that the financial assistance for the 7,000 women in Bagcha Village Panchayat had been discontinued since September of the previous year. He alleged that the state government was intentionally stopping the benefits due to the BJP's administration in the village.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the benefits should be directly deposited into the beneficiaries' bank accounts from the District Magistrate’s office, per the existing regulations.
The state government’s counsel stated that the matter was under investigation due to complaints regarding the distribution of benefits under the scheme.
Ultimately, the division bench sided with the petitioner’s argument and demanded clarifications from the state government.
