As of Monday, law enforcement officials stated that the identity of the deceased remains unknown. The victim, who was said to have resided in a hut adjacent to a crematorium, was discovered lifeless in a pond located in Kurshahat.
Upon recovery, notable evidence included cut marks on the neck and throat.
Following the discovery, a thorough investigation was initiated, leading to the arrest of a young man named Firdous Alam.
Reports suggest that the accused was possibly under the influence of substances. Police assert that he murdered the unidentified individual, transported the body near water, and subsequently attempted to conceal it.
During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to the murder and expressed his intention to partake in the body.
Dinhata SDPO Dhiman Mitra commented: “This incident is not only rare but also alarming. The suspect committed murder with the intent to consume human flesh, marking it as a rare case of cannibalism.”
“Local sources provided information about the suspect, leading to his swift arrest. An extensive investigation is currently in progress, with further updates forthcoming,” he added.
The body was retrieved on January 10, and the arrest took place on Monday, prompting a murder charge and an investigation by the Dinhata Sahibganj police station.
During the inquiry, Alam, a resident of Tharaikhana village, was taken to a district court on Monday, where he was remanded into police custody for four days.
