Srinagar, Dec 1 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced on Monday the apprehension of a suspect involved in the 1989 kidnapping case of Rubaiya Sayeed, daughter of the former Union Home Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, according to an official statement.
This marks the CBI's first arrest in this ongoing investigation since the case was transferred to the agency.
According to the agency's report, the suspect, Shafat Ahmad Shungloo, a resident of the Hawal area currently residing in Ishber Nishar in Srinagar, was arrested in connection with the 1989 abduction case.
Shungloo, son of Saif-ud-Din Shungaloo, was taken into custody from Police Station Nishat earlier on Monday.
"The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained an absconder, Shafat Ahmed Shangloo, wanted in a 35-year-old case related to the kidnapping of Dr Rubiya Sayeed, daughter of Shri Mufti Mohd. Sayeed, former Home Minister. The accused, Shangloo, collaborated with Yasin Malik and others in perpetrating a crime under various sections of the RPC and TADA Act in 1989," stated the CBI.
The individual is also subject to a reward of Rs 10 lakh.
Shungloo is set to be presented before the TADA Court Jammu within the legally required timeframe, as per the statement.
This arrest is part of the CBI's continued investigation into the decades-old kidnapping, which is one of the most high-profile criminal cases in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to official sources, the CBI conducted searches at the residences of two former Kashmir Divisional Commissioners and seven other individuals.
These operations were executed to gather evidence and ensure the investigation proceeds without obstruction.
Sources indicated that these actions were part of a meticulous and lawful process in this long-standing case. The kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed occurred on December 8, 1989, in the city of Srinagar.
She was taken by the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, and Rubaiya has previously identified Yasin Malik as one of her primary abductors. The JKLF demanded the release of five detained terrorists, and the then V.P. Singh government acquiesced to these demands to secure Rubaiya's release.
This case has remained significant due to its political and historical implications and the difficulties in achieving justice for the accused.
Experts opine that this recent arrest and the subsequent raids signify a renewed commitment from the CBI and could lead to new advancements in this case.
With investigations continuing for over 30 years post-abduction, Monday’s arrest represents a pivotal moment in a case that has lingered unresolved for more than three decades and continues to garner national attention.
