CBI arrests KAPL MD Anurag Danayak in ₹15 lakh bribery case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday, 15 July 2025, arrested Anurag Danayak, Managing Director of Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited (KAPL) — a Central Public Sector Enterprise — in connection with an alleged bribery case involving the renewal of a service agreement and the allotment of additional institutions to a Bhopal-based firm.
The Trap Operation
According to the CBI, Danayak was caught red-handed during a trap operation conducted in Noida on 15 July, while allegedly accepting ₹5 lakh as a part payment against a total bribe demand of ₹15 lakh. The agency alleged that the undue advantage was sought from a Bhopal-based authorised service agent of KAPL, which supplies medicines to government institutions across Madhya Pradesh.
Investigators alleged that Danayak had conditioned the renewal of the firm's Service Agent Agreement — and the processing of its application for assignment of additional institutions — on receipt of the bribe. Both matters were reportedly pending for the current financial year. The CBI further alleged that Danayak had also sought a share of the commission the firm earned from medicine sales during the year.
Cash, Gold, and Documents Seized
Following the arrest, CBI teams conducted searches at Danayak's residential and office premises across Bengaluru, Noida, and Jabalpur. Officials seized approximately ₹75 lakh in cash and foreign currency valued at around ₹4 lakh from his Noida residence and Bengaluru office chamber. Investigators also recovered 697 grams of gold jewellery and coins estimated at nearly ₹86 lakh, along with documents relating to a residential flat owned by the accused.
