Agartala, Aug 6 (NationPress) In response to a plea from Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has instructed senior officials to assess the status and initiate necessary actions for the National Highway-8, which serves as the essential lifeline for the state, officials reported on Wednesday.
The National Highway-8 stretches from Assam’s Sribhumi district (previously known as Karimganj) to the Sabroom sub-division of Tripura, adjacent to Bangladesh, linking Tripura with the broader national framework via Assam.
An official from the Chief Minister’s Office stated that Saha had previously briefed the Union Minister about the deteriorating condition of specific segments of the National Highway.
In reply to the Chief Minister’s appeal, Gadkari communicated in writing that a team from the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) had recently conducted an inspection of the National Highways.
A comprehensive report based on this inspection is expected to be delivered to the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways by August 15.
As per the Union Minister's directives, Krishna Kumar, the Managing Director of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL), will visit Tripura on August 10 to evaluate the ongoing construction and repair operations of various National Highways in the state.
The Chief Minister has consistently highlighted the pressing need for the refurbishment of these critical alternative highways to the Union Ministry, as noted by the official.
Moreover, Saha, who oversees the Public Works Department, has had multiple discussions over the phone with Union Minister Gadkari regarding this matter.
The Chief Minister has also instructed the Secretary of the Public Works Department, Kiran Gitte, to focus on this critical issue and coordinate efforts with central authorities.
Currently, Tripura is served by six National Highways, and the Centre has recently approved additional National Highways to enhance surface connectivity.
