Descendant of Vande Mataram's Author Joins BJP Ahead of Crucial Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 26 (NationPress) Sumitra Chattopadhyay, a descendant from the fifth generation of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, celebrated author of India’s national anthem, Vande Mataram, and a revered Bengali poet, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday.
His induction into the BJP took place at the party's state headquarters located in Salt Lake, Kolkata, where he was welcomed by Bhupender Yadav, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, along with Samik Bhattacharya, the State BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP.
Sumitra Chattopadhyay, who previously served as a bureaucrat in the West Bengal Labour department, is regarded by the BJP as a significant asset due to his combination of administrative expertise and his family legacy, which they believe will bolster their efforts against the Trinamool Congress in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
Upon joining the BJP, he sharply criticized the Trinamool Congress-led state government, particularly targeting their employment policies. He shared his experiences from his tenure in the Labour department, citing how the current administration has erased data on unemployed youths recorded at employment exchange centers and replaced it with a vague employment bank initiative.
"While 40 lakh names are listed in the employment bank, the actual unemployment crisis in West Bengal remains unresolved," he stated.
Political analysts suggest that allegations from a former state official, supported by factual evidence, elevate the discussion beyond mere political rhetoric, highlighting administrative shortcomings in West Bengal.
During Sumitra Chattopadhyay's induction, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav remarked on the deep-seated Bengali pride associated with Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. He expressed that 'Vande Mataram' stands as a pillar of nationalism and patriotism in India, emphasizing the significance of having a family member of its creator within the BJP.
Samik Bhattacharya, the State BJP President, stated that the inclusion of a prominent figure like Sumitra Chattopadhyay reflects a positive shift in the political landscape of West Bengal.
