New Delhi, May 8 (NationPress) Leaders from various political backgrounds on Thursday expressed outrage against Congress stalwart and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan for his controversial statements regarding the recent military operation dubbed 'Operation Sindoor'. His comments were labeled as shameful and indicative of cheap politics. In response, the Congress party distanced itself from Chavan's views, reaffirming its commitment to stand in solidarity with the government.
During his remarks on Wednesday, Chavan questioned the government's motives behind naming the operation, insinuating that it was aimed at garnering sentimental advantages.
He emphasized that wars are fought using weapons, not emotions, and criticized the NDA government for attempting to capitalize on emotional sentiments.
The operation, executed by the Indian armed forces, was aimed at nine significant terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), just days after the horrific April 22 terror incident in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, predominantly Hindu men.
Responding to Chavan's remarks, BJP national spokesperson Tuhin A. Sinha stated to IANS, 'He suggested that the name 'Operation Sindoor' was intended to secure emotional leverage. I find this to be a deeply shameful comment. For years, terrorists backed by Pakistan have been erasing the 'sindoor' of our mothers and sisters.'
'Following yesterday's operation, Pakistani terrorists will face heightened fear,' he added.
BJP MLA Ram Kadam also voiced similar sentiments, asserting, 'Chavan, as a former Chief Minister from Congress, seems to have made it a habit to trivialize sensitive issues with cheap politics.'
Even within the Congress, reactions to Chavan's comments were measured, with senior party leader Pawan Khera distancing the party from his statement.
Khera told IANS, 'I believe it’s not the right time for comments on this matter. We wholeheartedly endorse any measures the government pursues and stand firmly with them.'
NCP(SP) leader Amar Sharadrao Kale mentioned to IANS, 'The attack was on our nation, and in such situations, we unite for our country. Rahul Gandhi has already clarified that whatever stance the government adopts, the Opposition will be firmly behind it and offer complete support.'
The backlash against Chavan’s statement underscores the heightened sensitivity surrounding 'Operation Sindoor', as the name was symbolically chosen to honor the grief of families affected by the Pahalgam terror attack.
Numerous victims were newlyweds or accompanied by their spouses, and the symbolism of 'sindoor' — a traditional marriage sign in Hindu culture — was meant to embody the nation's collective sorrow and resilience against the massacre.
