Sheopur, March 23 (NationPress) A total of nine cheetahs, recently relocated from Botswana, have successfully completed their quarantine period at Kuno National Park in Sheopur district, Madhya Pradesh. After more than 20 days, these magnificent big cats are reported to be in excellent health.

Uttam Sharma, a senior officer of the Indian Forest Service (IFS) and the Field Director of Kuno National Park, shared with IANS on Monday that "all nine cheetahs from Botswana are healthy and fit as of now."

Once they finish their time in the quarantine enclosure, these cheetahs will be released into a larger area within the park's forested region.

Sharma noted, "After successfully completing over 20 days in quarantine, all cheetahs have met the health protocols required for their release," as stated in a newsletter from Kuno National Park.

He also provided insights into preparations made prior to the arrival of this new group of cheetahs. A new soft release boma, covering approximately 265 hectares, was created alongside the existing 700 hectares of enclosed natural forest, resulting in a total managed area nearing 1,000 hectares.

Furthermore, the quarantine boma has been improved—cleaned, reinforced, and equipped with sufficient water and shade, especially in anticipation of the forthcoming summer months, as highlighted in the Kuno newsletter.

Kuno National Park now boasts cheetahs from three different countries: Namibia, South Africa, and Botswana, in addition to cheetah cubs born in India at this park over the past three years, following the ambitious launch of 'Project Cheetah' on September 17, 2022.

Sharma remarked, "Cheetahs from these three nations create a unique and diverse genetic mix, likely unparalleled anywhere else in the world."

The population of cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh has now reached 53, which includes 38 cubs born in India. Of these, only three reside in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, while the remainder is located at Kuno National Park.
