Chennai, Jan 12 (NationPress) Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is set to officially launch the new air-conditioned double-decker sightseeing bus service in Chennai today, aimed at providing a well-rounded introduction to the city’s significant heritage and administrative sites for visitors.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), is expected to enhance organized urban sightseeing in the state capital. The launch of the double-decker bus has been made possible through contributions from the Tamil diaspora in the United States and a corporate social responsibility initiative from a private firm.

The inauguration ceremony will occur at the Nandambakkam Trade Centre, marking the official start of this service for tourists and local visitors. TTDC has secured all necessary operational permissions and has completed the initial phase of the route.

The sightseeing journey will commence at the TTDC office located on Wallajah Road, a central area close to numerous historic sites. The bus will traverse prominent city landmarks such as the Munro Statue on Anna Salai, the Madras High Court complex, the Reserve Bank of India building, the Secretariat, Napier Bridge, and Ezhilagam, before concluding at Foreshore Estate along the Marina waterfront. The return trip will take passengers back to the starting point via the DGP office, creating a circular route that facilitates easy navigation and seamless travel.

Officials have designed this service as a short-duration city tour, particularly aimed at tourists with limited time and first-time visitors seeking a comprehensive overview of Chennai.

The elevated seating of the double-decker bus is anticipated to offer stunning panoramic views of heritage buildings, main roads, and the coastline, enhancing the visual experience of the tour.

The tourism department plans to gather passenger feedback during the initial phase and make adjustments to the service as needed. Additional landmarks may be incorporated, and the frequency of service may be increased based on demand and operational viability in the coming months.

This launch coincides with ongoing urban and heritage development projects along Kamarajar Salai, undertaken by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and the Greater Chennai Corporation. Tourism stakeholders believe that the sightseeing bus will enhance these projects by allowing visitors to appreciate the city’s architectural heritage and evolving public spaces.

Through this initiative, the state government aims to position Chennai as a more accessible and engaging destination for structured urban tourism.
