Union Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday, 17 June championed the early rollout of the 'One Nation, One Election' concept at a public event in Patna, held to mark 12 years of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. Addressing prominent citizens and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers, Chouhan administered a pledge to advance the vision of a Viksit Bharat (Developed India).

Case for Simultaneous Elections

Chouhan argued that the current cycle of staggered state elections imposes a heavy fiscal burden and repeatedly stalls development work across the country. He contended that consolidating all elections into a single five-year cycle would allow both the Centre and state governments to govern without repeated interruptions.

'Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a wave of development is sweeping across the country. Frequent elections increase expenditure and affect development work. One Nation, One Election should be implemented at the earliest to accelerate growth,' Chouhan said at the event.

He sought explicit endorsement from party workers present and urged them to rally support for the proposal.

Chouhan highlighted several flagship outcomes he attributed to the Modi government's 12-year tenure, including women's empowerment initiatives, the expansion of tap-water connectivity to rural households, and the electrification of villages nationwide. He also underscored the government's stated commitment to making India a developed nation by 2047, a target framed under the Viksit Bharat agenda.

The minister noted that alongside the national development push, dedicated efforts are under way to secure a prosperous future for Bihar specifically — a signal to the state's electorate and party cadre.

Beyond electoral reform, Chouhan stressed economic self-reliance, urging citizens to reduce dependence on imported goods and embrace Swadeshi products as a means of strengthening the domestic economy. He framed this as a shared civic duty rather than a purely governmental mandate.

'While the government is doing its part, citizens must also fulfil their responsibilities. If every individual works sincerely, the country's progress cannot be stopped,' he said.
