Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday, 21 August addressed a felicitation programme for meritorious students in Budhni, his native town in Madhya Pradesh's Sehore district, urging young learners to set clear goals and pursue them with confidence and perseverance. The event, organised by the Prem-Sundar Foundation, saw Chouhan personally honour 30 meritorious students — including Class 10 toppers and Class 12 subject toppers from the Madhya Pradesh Board and CBSE — with laptops.

Key Developments at the Budhni Programme

Chouhan presented laptops to students who had excelled academically, calling their achievements a source of pride for their families, society, and the wider region. He was clear that the gesture was intended not just as recognition but as a signal to other students to raise their own ambitions. 'Our children have immense talent. What they need is the right encouragement and opportunities. With confidence, hard work and continuous effort, every child can achieve their goal,' he said.

He also addressed students who did not receive laptops, urging them not to lose confidence and affirming that talent was not in short supply among them.

Chouhan as 'Mama': The Personal Connect

The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, widely referred to as 'Mama' by children across Madhya Pradesh, struck a personal note during his address. 'I have come here not as a Union Minister but as your Mama. Mama means a mother's affection, a father's shoulder and a companion like a friend. I consider efforts to make children's lives better the fulfilment of my life,' he said.

Chouhan recalled his own schooling in government institutions — first in his village Jait and later in Bhopal — saying he had never allowed limited resources or difficult circumstances to become obstacles to his ambitions.

Push for AI, Medical Infrastructure and Career Guidance

Looking beyond the ceremony, Chouhan stressed the urgency of preparing students for emerging technologies, specifically naming artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics as fields rapidly shaping the future. He said efforts were under way to introduce courses in these areas locally so that students would not need to relocate to pursue relevant careers.

On the infrastructure front, he announced that a medical college with approximately 750 beds had been completed in Budhni, with a nursing college also under development. Recruitment of faculty and procurement of equipment were being actively pursued to make the institution operational at the earliest.

Chouhan also announced plans for post-Class 12 career counselling and a dedicated help desk — particularly for girls entering college — to assist students with scholarship applications and academic navigation.

This comes amid a broader push by the BJP-led Centre to position education and skilling as pillars of rural development. Chouhan's outreach in Budhni — his political home base — reflects an effort to combine welfare delivery with grassroots engagement ahead of continued electoral cycles in Madhya Pradesh.
